“The Mosquito Coast” film tells the story of an obsessive inventor who, fed up with consumerism and the American Dream, takes his family to the Central American jungle to find a simpler and happier life. Based on a novel by Paul Theroux, the stellar cast includes Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix. It is also Butterfly McQueen’s last feature film. Australian Peter Weir directed it after “Witness,” his first American film, and it showcases his flair for filming large landscapes. Much of “The Mosquito Coast” is filmed in Belize, which is my family heritage. I loved seeing Belize on the big screen portrayed with Weir’s deft skill.
