Irving, the Jamaican bobsled team coach, played by John Candy, explains why he cheated at the 1972 Winter Olympics. He placed extra weights into his U.S. team’s sled. He was caught, and his two 1968 Olympic medals were taken from him.
Derice, a top 100-meter runner, recruited Irv as coach for the first Jamaican bobsled team after failing to qualify at the Olympic Trial for the 1988 Summer Olympics. Irving had retired in disgrace in Jamaica, where he led an impoverished life as a bookie.
