Portuguese GNR Soldier Saves Chained Dog From House Fire

A Guarda Nacional Republicana soldier saved a dog that was chained in a burning house in the town of Vila Ruiva, Cuba Municipality, Baixa Alentejo region.
The GNR had responded to a house fire call on July 29. On arrival, they learned that Duque, the dog, was chained up inside "in a situation of imminent danger", reported SIC Notícias (July 31).
The Guard Aragão, a soldier from the Alvito Territorial Post, part of the Beja Territorial Command, did not hesitate to run through the fire to save the animal, reported Norte Alentejo (July 31). The soldier emerged from the flames with Duque in his arms.
"It's gestures like this which fill us with pride, reflecting the Guard's commitment to protecting life," the GNR said, in a statement.
Aragão suffered minor injuries and has since returned to duty, according to the GNR.
Duque received medical treatment at the site and was returned to his owners, reported SIC Notícias.
Sadly, two days later, the dog died of his injuries, according to SIC Notícias.
