In Central Portugal, the Beiras is known for the Serra da Estrela and its sculptural granite boulders, its holistic way of life and its tranquility. It is no wonder that the members of the Other World's Artist Collective found their way here from other countries such as England.
The work on exhibit in Tábua is as diverse as its creators. It includes painting, sculpture, photography, felting, ceramics, mixed media and musical instruments. Many pieces are available for purchase at reasonable prices.
"Our collective has been in existence for just over four years . . . ," founder Fiona Whyte told The Portugal News (September 22). "One of the things we do is arrange exhibitions and show our work to a greater community and also encourage other artists or conversations about art."
Fiona Whyte has lived 14 years in Portugal. She studied art in Brighton, England, specializing in ceramics and sculpture. However, since visiting disused wool factories in the Serra da Estrela mountains, she has been using wool fibers to make art, according to The Portugal News:
"I started making scarves from these fibers and then I realised that felt could be manipulated in a similar way to clay under the right conditions with soap and water and a lot of elbow grease and sometimes a sander as well. You can make some tremendous three-dimensional forms. I am just always fascinated to see what is possible with a few bits of sheep fleece."
